New Website Look & Feel - Feedback

By Steven K. - Posted on 16 September 2008

Please feel free to add comments here, letting us know what you like and dislike about the website.

It's incredibly simple to use. Thanks

I've started to freshen up the front page a bit.  I wanted fewer words and more people-pix.  Then I pasted a longer welcome note in the "About Us" page.

As always, open to suggestions...

Feedback received was that the teasers on the Wellness page (generated by Simple Views module, sorted by title alphabetically) did not coincide with the submenu order.

Using the Views module, I removed the sort by title, and added a sort by node id, now it jives!

I added an Advanced help module, to assist with Views development.

For fun, I also added the Nice Menus module, and placed their canned block onto the footer.  Our current theme already has this capability; it has been enabled and is shown at the top of the page (not really the header, it is built right into the theme).  Feel free to compare the two.  I like the theme-based one better (has nicer shadowing).

What I really like is the drop menus in concert with the dynamic side menus.  Watch how they update (expand and contract) depending on where you are at the moment.

[ team effort, 1 hour; result, priceless ]

We had an issue arise where the width of this site didn't fit into certain windows on some screens and it displayed the right hand side content on the front page down at the bottom instead of where it belongs.

Please leave a comment here if you encounter that same problem.

We're wondering if the issue might be which version of IE the user is using. Older versions may not handle this site well.  If that's the case we'll need to tweak the site so that is not a problem.

(note to Steven - I experimented with several screen resolutions but couldn't reproduce the problem. that led me to believe it might be an older version of IE that is the culprit.  the sanctuary computer is running a "pre-tabs" version of IE. I'll update it there and see if that addresses our issue.)

Well, playing with Simple Views actually.  It's incredibly simple to use!!!

I created two new content types - Events - and Sermon Text

I haven't played with Sermon Text yet, but Events worked beautifully and easily.  Click [Faith Events] and see...

In the usual place where you create content select Event from the list instead of Story or Page

Then, create your Event mash-up including pictures or whatever, much like John would do as separate pulisher files in the old/current environment.

Then, just save it.  I've told "Simple Views" to go and find every node of "Event" type and display the teaser of them in reverse chronological order - although we could also do it as a list if that would work better.  Then if the user wants to know more than the teaser they just click "More" and it goes to the fuller event mash-up.  It will have to fit in the standard drupal page environment, but I think ultimately that's a good thing for consistency.

Also - I tinkered with the front page by making the What's New bit pop out a bit more and adding a horizontal line.  It's weird that the What's New shows as centred in the edit window but displays justified left???

I also edited and rearranged the front page right hand sidebar elements.  We don't need the worship info there anymore because it's now in the masthead.

This is fun!!!!!!!!

Larry

I played with SimpleViews when it was installed (along with the Views Module), and created a "newest first" in the admin. menu.

I test-drove the new Faith - Events  by adding the Lighting the Darkness event. Piece of (cheese)cake!!

Sermon text works, but at first I was not used to the expanding submenu under Sermons.  Not a biggie, if the sermon text is linked in the table within Sermons, instead of linking to EarRelevantFaith.com

A gold star * for Larry (if we were still in grade school) This IS fun ?;^{!)

I added the Images Module, which provides image file import, and storage within "galleries".

I created a main gallery at Faith - Photos. Administrators can create more nested galleries.

Images can also be uploaded individually, then inserted into web pages using the WYSIWYG editor with a URL link.

Faith Church "Masthead" (Banner) added, by replacing the Themes banners with copies of the Faith masthead JPG files.  Did not edit the CSS file (yet).

JPG size should be 970x200, 100DPI

HI Guys: IS whats posted the old small size or the  new one - ? I can resize it to what ever is required.

the revised JPG file (970x200, 100DPI) is perfectly sized.

Great Work Stephen - I like it

Hey Guys

Well, I've been playing in the sandbox.

I haven't done anything to the main/front page yet.  Maybe this afternoon??

I'm hoping that we can recreate much of the stuff that is on the current front page - I especially still like the map, the weekly prayer, and the virtual tour!

I think there's probably a module that allows upcoming events to kind of flash through in sequence in a little box - that'd be cool!

For now, i've started to think about how to layout the site. I'm trying to balance "insiders" needs and "outsiders" needs.  I like the idea of playing on the "Welcome, Wellness, Worship" tag.  I've started to organize all the different things we have into those categories - you can tell me if you like where I've put things.

I essentially grouped anything to do with "church community" into Welcome - anything to do with "forming or acting" in faith into Wellness - and Worship was pretty much anything to do with Sunday Morning (although, it's more than that...)

I didn't erase anything that was previously done.  I just "disabled" it.  It's nice to be able to mess around with out losing anything!

Shalom,

Larry

Larry, I am in awe of you!

I love it - old reference lost on the the young ( <<< I hope you'll get a kick out of this Youtube)

I like what you have done to the menu layout, and agree with the "Welcome, Wellness, Worship" format, and how you've buried the Drupal admin type stuff to the footer. Duplicate Primary Menu picks in Header are also good.

Haven't fixed the wysiwyg yet - I see that it displays it in the composing part - we'll see if it displays when I post this.

I've been playing with themes. I know you're supposed to do all the groundwork first - but for me I really enjoy seeing the layout in different visual ways.
