100606 Martin Luther pp. 115-120

Good morning (or Good whatever-time-of-day-you-are-reading-this)!  Here are this week's questions. As always, you can answer the questions or go off in your own direction as you read and ponder what Luther has to say about prayer.

1. Prayer, according to Luther, involves stating what is in our hearts.  How open and honest, would you say, is your prayer life?  Do you find it difficult to be yourself before God?
2. According to Luther, one of two things is certain to happen each time we lift up a prayer to God.  What are these two things?
3. Of all the attitudes necessary for true prayer, perhaps none is more essential for Luther than trust.  In what areas in your life do you find it difficult to trust God?
4. Luther believes that we sin on the left when we lack faith and that we sin on the right when we prescribe specific measures and times to God. On which of the two sides are you prone to lean in your prayers?
5. Jesus said, "Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours," How does this compare or contrast with what Martin Luther teaches concerning prayer?

I find it difficult  to trust God with my anxiety. I am told that I can hand over my anxiety to God, yet it’s hard to let go of. To hand my anxiety over to God would feel foolhardy because I think I have a superstitious belief that to feel anxiety in some way protects me.

I have the same issue with my kids.  I have from time to time handed over my children to God, but it has always been just temporarily.  I need to feel that I am available to take care of them even when I know I can't.  Maybe I'm just a control freak!
